Gemstone Values
Royalty and media stars often possess expensive jewellery which, as well as diamonds, is set with emeralds, sapphires and rubies, all gemstones with a long and distinguished history. Natural, untreated emeralds, sapphires and rubies can fetch very high prices. provided they have good colour and transparency, and are free from inclusions, although emeralds nearly always have inclusions to a greater or lesser extent. Gemstones should be cut in such a way that the light is reflected and refracted back to the observer, resulting in brilliance and sparkle.
After emeralds, sapphires and rubies, which along with diamonds are classed as precious stones, the next price range consists of connoisseur gems such as black opal, jadeite, fancy coloured sapphires, pink topaz, chrysoberyl cat's-eye, demantoid garnet and alexandrite, closely followed by gems such as tanzanite, tsavorite garnet, aquamarine, tourmaline, red spinel, chrome diopside, imperial zircon, imperial topaz and spessartite garnet.
The most affordable gemstones include amethyst, white opal, citrine, ametrine, peridot, rhodolite garnet, blue topaz, iolite, kunzite, andalusite, lapis lazuli, turquoise, onyx, chrysoprase, nephrite jade, and amber.
